No room at Paws Inn: cat sanctuary in Weaverham appeals for help

A cat rescue in Weaverham is bursting at the seams. Paws Inn Cat Rescue is currently home to over 50 cats and kittens which urgently need good homes.

Teresa Phillips, who runs Paws Inn with just one weekend helper, has rehomed over 4000 abandoned, stray and mistreated cats since she started rescuing 18 years ago.

One of Paws Inn’s current residents is Isabella, who was recently dumped on a remote country lane when she was pregnant. She somehow managed to survive on what she could catch and a few scraps of food given to her by a kindly 90-year-old local couple.

Isabella’s plight was reported to Teresa by the couple’s care worker as they were moving to a home, leaving poor Isabella with absolutely no one to help her. She and her two surviving 13- week-old kittens from a previous litter were completely unapproachable so all three had to be carefully trapped.

While at Paws Inn, Isabella has given birth to five more kittens, all of whom are doing well. Despite her ordeals she is now a very friendly cat who just cries out for love. Like all Paws Inn cats, she will be spayed, vaccinated and microchipped before rehoming.

Strict no kill policy

Paws Inn provides warmth, shelter, nourishment and excellent veterinary treatment as well as the love and care needed to rehabilitate each cat before placing him or her into a carefully vetted new home.

Teresa has a strict no kill policy and fights for every single life. Cats too old or infirm for rehoming but who have good quality of life remain with her and enjoy their autumn days in a home environment.

While Teresa lives for her work, she does admit she is desperate for help. With just one volunteer, the endless labour of feeding, grooming, cleaning, vet's appointments and round-the-clock rescue operations falls almost entirely on her shoulders. And money is always in short supply: Paws Inn is funded entirely by Teresa herself and donations from well-wishers.

Says Teresa: ‘Every weather-beaten, flea-ridden and battle-scarred stray is a living being who feels fear, pain, cold, hunger and thirst. No animal deserves to be abandoned to a life of such misery and suffering.’
